Dive Into Church History
At Church History Academy, we bring church history to life through engaging courses and live webinars, making learning accessible and interactive.
Featured Course
This course traces the lives and legacies of nine trailblazing African American religious leaders who built independent Black denominations and claimed episcopal authority in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — a time when American society and the church denied Black people's capacity to lead. Drawing on the scholarship of Bishop Andy C. Lewter, official historian of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, students will examine Richard Allen (AME), James Varick (AMEZ), William Henry Miles (CME), James Augustine Healy (Catholic), William J. Simmons (Baptist convention founder) , Charles Harrison Mason, Charles Price Jones, William J. Seymour, and William E. Fuller Sr. (Holiness and Pentecostal)
Early Black Bishops in America: Pioneers of Faith and Freedom
Each figure navigated distinct traditions — Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Holiness, and Pentecostal — offering varied models of episcopal authority and strategies for building institutions under the weight of slavery, Jim Crow, violence, and systematic exclusion.
By the end of this course, students will understand the structural barriers Black leaders overcame, the theological visions that sustained them, and the denominational institutions they built that continue to shape American Christianity today.
Suitable for:
Undergraduate and seminary students, church historians, clergy, and anyone interested in the intersection of race, religion, and American history.
